In Vietnamese language, her name Ngan means "star". Ngan was born into a family of three, with a cleft lip and a gaping hole in her palate. For the first three years of her life, she was living in shame and isolation in the small village of Gia Lai province in central highland Vietnam.

Hearing about the Operation Smile team coming to Da Nang in 2002, Ngan’s whole family traveled for miles to see if they could help her. Though it was late on screening day, their efforts paid off as Ngan was selected for surgery. Now Ngan’s star can shine brightly.
