Hanoi and Hue - March 19 to March 29, 2008

Operation Smile’s International teams of Medical and non-Medical volunteers worked in Hanoi and Hue for Operation Smile's 12th annual Dental Mission to Vietnam. Both Medical teams provided patients with extractions, Dental restorations, root canals and cleanings.

At the Hanoi Medical University, the team provided 309 Dental examinations and performed 257 free Dental procedures for Vietnamese children and young adults.

This was the organization’s second Dental Mission in Hue to be coordinated from the Operation Smile Comprehensive Care Clinic at the Hue Odonto-Stomatological Hospital. In addition to running the clinic, the team also staffed three fully-equipped Dental vans, which visited schools to provide Dental treatment as well as promote Dental hygiene and education. In Hue, 4,499 patients received free Dental examinations and 2,648 patients received free Dental procedures.

The combined teams consisted of more than 30 Dental professionals from the United States including oral surgeons, endodontists, a periodontist, an orthodontist, pediatric dentists, general dentists, and others. Also participating were 11 dentistry students from the University of Maryland, who partnered with Operation Smile volunteers as a part of the educational program of the Mission.

The goal of Operation Smile's Dental Mission to Vietnam is to improve the country's oral care by treating existing Dental problems as well as to provide education and supplies for hygiene maintenance. Every person examined during the clinics was given a toothbrush, toothpaste and education about the importance of oral hygiene.

Bao Loc - May 31 to June 8, 2007

An Operation Smile International team of Medical and non-Medical volunteers traveled to Bao Loc to provide 231 free Medical evaluations and surgery to 143 children born with facial deformities. The Operation Smile team consisted of more than 50 Medical professionals from Italy, New Zealand, the United States and Vietnam who provided patients with life-changing surgeries. The Operation Smile team consists of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, a pediatric intensivist, dentist, speech therapists and others who worked at Lam Dong Hospital No. 2.

During the Mission, four Vietnamese volunteers completed a bio-medical training program conducted by two Operation Smile bio-medical technician volunteers from the United States. The program trains the volunteer’s techniques in setting up, testing and maintaining the state-of-the-art equipment that Operation Smile is supplying each of its partner countries. This is a major step toward reaching Operation Smile's goal of having at least one person trained in bio-medical technology in each of its partner countries.

On March 30, 2007, Operation Smile Vietnam inaugurated a new Comprehensive Care Center in Hue, Vietnam, in conjunction with Hue Odonto-Stomatological Hospital of Thua Thien Hue. This center is one of at least seven new centers to be opened this year in Operation Smile partner countries across the globe as part of the organization's anniversary initiatives. The Operation Smile Comprehensive Care Center in Hue, Vietnam, is based in the Hue Odonto-Stomatological Hospital, and will treat children year-round who suffer from cleft lips and cleft palates, as well as provide education and training to Medical professionals in the region. Approved and supported by Thua Thien Hue People's Committee and Health Service Department, the Center is expected to provide free treatment for at least 2,000 patients and train about 1,000 Medical professionals in different fields annually.

This was the first International Medical Mission to Bao Loc, Vietnam. Since 1989, Operation Smile has treated more than 19,000 children in Vietnam through International Medical Missions, in-country local Missions and Dental Missions. In addition, Operation Smile Vietnam has been providing Medical care and training to neighboring Laos.

Hanoi and Hue - March 22 to March 30, 2007

Two Operation Smile International teams of Medical and non-Medical volunteers traveled to Hanoi and Hue for Operation Smile's 11th annual Dental Mission to Vietnam. The teams provided free Dental procedures to 2,161 Vietnamese children and young adults. The Hanoi and Hue teams each consisted of more than 20 Dental professionals from the United States including oral surgeons, endodontists, periodontists, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, general dentists and others. Both Medical teams provided patients with extractions, Dental restorations, root canals and cleanings. This Mission was the largest in the program's 11-year history. Once again, Operation Smile volunteers partnered with the University of Maryland in order to continue the educational aspect of the Mission.

The goal of Operation Smile's Dental Mission to Vietnam is to improve the country's oral hygiene by treating current problems while providing education and supplies for hygiene maintenance. Every person that was screened at all of the clinics was given a free toothbrush, toothpaste, and education about the importance of oral hygiene.

The Mission in Hanoi began with an educational symposium held at the Fortuna Hotel. The Operation Smile team members presented lectures, accompanied by power point presentations and a translator, to a group of 110 local dentists and professionals. Education continued throughout the week at the Hanoi Medical School. The teams in Hanoi treated over 400 children during the week.

The week in Hue ended with a celebration for the opening of the Operation Smile Comprehensive Care Center in the Hue Odonto-Stomatological Hospital on the morning of March 30. The Center will treat children year-round who suffer with cleft lips and cleft palates, as well as provide education and training to Medical professionals in the region.

This was the first Operation Smile Dental Mission in Hue to be coordinated from the new comprehensive care clinic at the Hue Odonto-Stomatological Hospital. In addition to running the clinic, the team also staffed three fully equipped Dental vans, which visited schools to provide Dental treatment as well as hygiene and education. In total, the Hue team provided Dental treatment to over 1,700 people and oral hygiene education to thousands of children.

Operation Smile is thankful to have the support from, and partnership with, P/S Protecting Vietnamese Smiles (PVS) and Unilever Vietnam. Thanks to their efforts, we had two additional dentists participating in the Mission, two additional Dental vans, and 20,000 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste.
